I'm a loser
I just got the call to tell me I didn't get the job I applied for. They gave it to some grad student instead.
I'm not surprised. I didn't think the interview went that well. There were three partners and two really liked me, but the third one clearly didn't and she seemed to be in charge. But at least she called me. Most of them don't bother.
I suppose it's just as well. The job didn't pay enough to barely cover the rent here and it would have just complicated the search for something better. I'm trying to think of this all as a test of my belief that the universe gives you what you need, and not necessarily what you want. And as I always remind others, nothing bad lasts forever.
Still, it doesn't feel great to be rejected. It's weird, all my life I've been offered almost every job I've applied for. I've had to turn down jobs because I took something else. That feels a lot better than this.

Champagne Blond
I have a job interview in the morning. It looks like a nice place to work but it's part time and it doesn't pay enough to even cover the rent. Still it would be good to get out of the house and it would establish some local references.
So I decided I should color my hair to look younger. I was really nervous about doing it. I haven't done it in a really long time. As in decades. I was convinced my hair would either fall out or turn a weird color. I couldn't decide whether to do it right before the interview or not. My cyberfriends convinced me to go for it.
So I'm now a champagne blond instead of gray. I think it's a little too beige for skin tone. I think after it washes out, I'm going to use the warmer tone if I do it again. Still it doesn't look bad. I don't think it makes me look any younger though. I still have wrinkles and I wouldn't get botoxed even if I could afford it.
Nudibranch blogging
Sea slugs. Weird but beautiful. These critters make me a little squeamy when I watch them, but they're so gorgeous that I couldn't stop. And I liked the water sound in the background.
Via Phila who usually just posts a weekly photo. It's amazing to me how many different varieties there are and they're all beautiful. Nature is funny that way, no?

Out in the Cold
The worst thing about being broke and jobless is that I'm afraid to turn my heat on. Those who know me well know how awful this is for me. Most of my life I lived with people who wouldn't turn on the heat and I get chilled easily. I don't function as well when I'm cold.
When I started living alone, the one thing I was always willing to splurge on is a warm house. I don't feel like I can do that right now so I'm keeping the thermostat at 63 and cringe every time it kicks on. I hate being cold.
Of course it could be worse. At least I live in the south and I'm not totally freezing. And the good news is, with my apartment being on the second floor, it's not so bad at night. I have lots of blankets and the neighbors kick up their heat I think so it keeps me warmer than I would have been if I was still on Randolph Place. So there's that.
Sappy songs I love
Sorry folks. It's been a weird week. I seem to have some kind of bug and haven't felt well at all. Adding to my misery I burned my lip really badly when I bit too soon into a piece of pizza. The cheese sure didn't look that hot when I bit into it but it stuck to the lip long enough that it was scabbed over and cracking and bleeding all week. But I seem to be shaking it now and have big plans to get a lot done this weekend. Meanwhile, I ran across this video. I just love this stuff. Maybe you do too.

Red Sox Nation
I join my fellow citizens of the RSN in deep mourning. I can only see the games here when it gets to the World Series and it was a very sad game. Oh well. There's always next year...
Necropolis
I think this is pretty cool.
Workers renovating a rugby stadium have uncovered a vast complex of tombs beneath Rome that mimic the houses, blocks and streets of a real city, according to officials, who have unveiled a series of new finds.Pictures at the link.
Culture Ministry officials said Thursday that medieval pottery shards in the city of the dead, or necropolis, show the area may have been inhabited by the living during the Dark Ages after being used for centuries for burials during the Roman period.
I always thought I would make a good archaeologist. It would suit me to be outside, digging in the dirt with a teaspoon and a whisk broom, carefully uncovering antiquities. If I ever won big at the lottery I might volunteer for a dig somewhere.

Blast from the past
I thought this was older but it claims to be from 1980.
You don't see that label much anymore. I always thought it was a catchy tune.

RIP Levi Stubbs
I never really knew his name but the Four Tops were always one of my Motown favorites.
If you don't remember them, here's some history and some more here with more photos.
On another note, I realize I haven't been posting. There's a lot of reasons, but none of them are that great. Mostly, I'm still in this funk, freaking out about my future and trying to figure out what to do. The good news is, I've found the link to the future posting thingy so I'm really going to try to set up a week's worth of posts at a time for those of you dear readers who still check in even though I've neglected you so horribly.
Thanks for sticking with me my dears.

I have another dentist's appointment today and once again I'm remiss in posting here so I thought I'd at least give you something new to look at. I found this when I was cleaning my inbox.
Catfish is always sending me amazing photos. I saved this from August of 06 which should tell you something about how often I manage to delete old mail. Back in the days when they limited your storage space I never had more than a couple of hundred. Now that there is no appreciable limit, between my two accounts, I have about 15,000. I would just delete the lot and start fresh, but there's always a few I want to save. Account ID info and such and old emails from dear friends.
I was noticing as I started from the oldest pages that I had long exchanges with people I don't remember anymore. The internet is like traveling. Sometimes you make a friend on the road and for a while you stay in touch, but sooner or later, for the most part, the connection fades and you don't talk anymore.

A refreshing pause?
Once again via Avedon, I don't know quite what to make of this Orangina ad either. The main objection seems to be the drink is targeted to kids and the ad is way too sexy. I don't really think of it as a kid's drink myself and the ad is running in Europe, not Iowa. Europeans are a lot less inhibited about sex and I doubt this is much racier than a lot of stuff on their teevee. But what do I know?
I guess I would say the ad doesn't really offend me but it doesn't make me want to run out and buy some Orangina. Rather the opposite.

Is that an elephant in the room?
I've been in a black funk for a few days but I'm going to try to write something interesting later today. For the moment, since I haven't posted here in days again, Avedon put me on to this amusing story. You have to click over even if you just look at the pictures.
This what happens when you build a hotel on a elephant migration road. They don't really follow the street signs. Amazing.
