When I Was Young

When I was kid this was one of my favorite landmarks. This rock was huge and used as prop for a hotdog stand. The other side had a sad face.

But what I loved about it was that seeing it meant we were almost to Candlewood Lake Park. I spent many a contented summer day here.

This was the public swimming place and if memory serves you had to buy a season pass to get in. It was a colored metal pin, and as a resident student you got a good discount. Even with the worth of money in those days, it was cheap.

Back in the day, there were two floats offshore, called appropriately enough, the big float and the little float. One had a high diving board and the other either had a low board or a slide. Maybe my sister will remember. [Photo thanks to Marc A. Catone]

Oh, how I remember! Summer days spent at the beach, listening to music, flirting with the lifeguards and having all that glorius water to splash in.
Yes, the big float had a diving board and the little float had a slide.
I can remember the huge sense of accomplishement when I finally made it to the big float. It was a rite of passage from kid to teenager.
BTW - the dog rock was still there last fall.

I remember the day I made it to the big float and the first time I had the nerve to jump off the high dive. And I mean jump. I never dove off.

And the snack bar. Pretzel sticks and that gooey carmel candy bar on a stick. What was that called?

Oh yeah, what were those caramel things? I remember losing a filling or two...
Sugar Daddy! That's what they were and you could get a bag of Sugar Babies that looked like little candy turds!

Sugar Daddy, that was it. Think they cost about a nickel and they lasted forever.
