Happy Halloween

Be careful out there. Lots of amateurs drinking and driving. And Zombies. This is coolest graphic I found all month on Facebook. It really works. If you stare at the fog long enough, you see more and more of the walking dead. (works best if you click to make it bigger)

Cutest photo of the month.

And best sculpture. A pumpkin ganesh.

If you're going out to enjoy the festivities, hope your night is full of treats.

A healthy Halloween

Not all treats are made of sugar. Love this idea. Would never have thought of it myself.

Trick or treat!

This is so cute from the Halloween dog parade in NYC. More photos here.

Little sweetie

Actually hate candy corn as a adult, but loved it as a kid. Being a bit OCD, I used to nibble the kernels, one color at a time. Not that pure sugar tastes any different, but I believed it did then. In any event, this is a really great idea for a baby costume. Thinking it would be easy to make at the last minute with felt instead of knitting it.

Just a little punkinhead

Before I lose my crazy cat lady posting rep, this made me smile even though the poor little kitty doesn't look too happy about it.

Every witch way but loose

Getting closer to the big night. For all my witchy friends. This one made me laugh.

Smiling pumpkins

Love this graphic. Another happy pumpkin patch.

Why you gotta be so mean

Slightly different theme from an earlier theme. Looks like it may have done by the same person. Munching pumpkin.

No bones about it

For a little change of pace, no Halloween is complete without a skeleton. Thought this was very clever.

Put on a happy face

These pumpkins of the day are fake, but loved the cheery faces.

Best pumpkin patch ever

It's the thatched cottage that makes this one so pretty. And look -- white pumpkins.

Natural wonders

Found on facebook. Comments tells me this is a real heating wood supply so by spring this amazing woodpile will be gone. Lot of work for just a couple of months, but maybe they put it up green so it's been there a while. Either way, very creative.

Pumpkins of the day

Lost the link for this one but someone on my twitter list got an early start on the carving. Pretty sweet collection.

Little cob house for you and me

I've been reading about these cob houses lately. No they're not made of corn cobs, it's some kind of stucco like process. I've been told they aren't that cheap to build but the ones featured here are cheap enough for me. Love how earthy they look. Kind of hobbitish. Would love to find an affordable bit of land and build one for myself.

Making babies

This is the most astounding thing I've seen on the internets in a very long time. This is not a real baby:

This is doll made by Camille Allen that is so tiny it fits in the palm of your hand. See more of her work at her website.

Pumpkin of the Day

Don't believe I've ever seen anything like this one. I didn't even know you could get a white pumpkin. Very well done.

Pumpkin of the day

This is very old cartoon, but it still makes me laugh. Pumpkin Pi!

Bluebird, outside my window

Actually these Taiwainese blue magpies have never been outside my window. I've never seen one before I found this on the Facebook. But they're so gorgeous it makes me want to go to Taiwan and see them in real life.

Pumpkin of the day

Since we're getting closer to Halloween, here's a cute black kitten to go with your pumpkin.

Reflections on what used to be

This is autumn photo of the day. Love shots where they play on reflections in the water. This one is so perfectly framed I wonder if it was either staged or photoshopped. Still love it even if it is.

Pumpkin of the day

Not that original a theme, but nicely rendered. I especially like the Viking horns.

Cool baby, cool

I can't believe I've become one of "those people" who use the internets to post cat pictures, but this one is just too great not to share.

Short story for a Sunday

I don't know why I follow this guy on the twitter. I'm sure it's because he followed me first, but I rarely understand his tweets. He's some kind of media critic who reviews shows I never watch. But this link made it worth while. It's kind of a goth thing adapted to a steampunk style. I enjoyed it maybe you will too. Here's the opening:
“Nothing that calls itself a Governess,” said Little Darcy. Darcy was still missing teeth, and spoke strangely around the stiff collar points he’d been affecting of late. “They are dependably wicked.”

“And nothing clockwork,” added his sister, Wild Charlotte. She wore a headdress of bright, unnatural feathers and had red stripes painted along her cheeks. “None of that in our home.”

Adelaide stared down at them, exasperated. She hated nothing more than when the twins ganged up on her like this, with their nonsensical demands.

“What about Nurse? You love it at Sebastian’s house.”

Nurse was a tick-tock thing that had served her dearest friend’s household as long as they’d lived. Charlotte had always been fond of the old girl, but now, she shook her curls. “Clockworks are fine for the Rocqueforts, but not for us. It’s enough that you’ll explode us one day with your experiments. I won’t have it.”
If you liked that so far, read the rest here.

Pumpkin of the day

Not likely to do this every single day, but since it is October, I'll be collecting these and posting them as I find them. Today is Steampunk Pumpkin:

I wonder if it lights up at night.

Like ducks to water

This is the heart melting story of the day:
These ducks were rescued from a hoarder, who was keeping over 160 fowl in filthy, overcrowded conditions. The neglected birds had never even seen a pond. But the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary has nursed them back to health, repairing infections, injured feet, and nutritional deficiencies — and now you can watch these newly rehabilitated duckies learn to swim. They’re a bit confused about it at first, but eventually, they take to it like a … well, you know.

Big bear versus angry lady

Pretty sure I wouldn't have the nerve to do this today, but when I lived on the farm, I wouldn't even have thought twice about trying it. Especially if I was close enough to my door to get away in case it didn't go well.

Puppies!

I guess I really have become that person who posts puppies and kittens on the internet, but how could I not share this one. Too squee!

For my Dad

It's been exactly one year and three days since my Dad died. He had a thing for trains, especially steam engines. A steam engine train actually saved his life once. A long story I might tell someday. Anyway, he would have loved this photo I found today on Facebook.

I still miss him with a physical ache. Not a day goes by when I don't wish he was still with us. Since he's been gone, my world feels more like this:

I see your true colors shining through

There are lots of things I miss about New England. One of them is the brilliant colors of the trees in the fall. I still get colors here in my little corner of the south, especially in the mountains, but they're never quite as brilliant as a perfect foliage season up north. This photo speaks to me of many a fall walk I took down quiet country roads in October.
